The Monterey Hotel in Historic Downtown Monterey

This room was provided free of charge; all opinions are my own.

The Monterey Hotel is situated right in downtown Monterey, a stone’s throw from Fisherman’s Wharf. It is a beautiful old Victorian building that is actually part of the Monterey Historic Park, and it was a great home base for two days of exploring both Monterey and the Big Sur coastline. Here is all the information on this hotel.

Details

  • Book Here
  • Continental breakfast included
  • Parking offsite or valet for an added charge
  • Location: 407 Calle PrincipalMontereyCalifornia 93940

Getting There

Take Highway 1 to towards Monterey and exit 401A for Aguajito Road. Turn left onto Aguajito and then left on Fremont St. You will continue onto Alvarado St, and the hotel will be on the left. There is no parking lot, so you must valet or park downtown.

The Hotel

When I first saw this hotel while exploring the historic park, I loved the beautiful exterior with its Victorian charm. The inside retains that historic vibe, but with many of the modern amenities you have come to expect from upscale hotels like this.

Since we were gone most of the day exploring the area we elected to valet park each night when we got to the hotel. It is a nice experience as the car was always waiting for us when we needed it.

We booked a king room in the recently redone part of the hotel, and it was a large, spacious room complete with a bed, couch, and fireplace.

The bed was comfortable and spacious while the included couch and fireplace (activated with a light switch) made it a beautiful place to relax with a glass of wine as well.

The bathroom was large and well lit with a nice shower that got hot fast. The included continental breakfast was a great addition to the hotel experience as it had lots of pastries and fresh bagels as well as large bowls of fruit and, of course, coffee.

Once you got your food, you dined in a beautiful historic room right off the hotel lobby.

The hotel proved to be an excellent spot for exploring the Monterey area as you could easily walk to Fisherman’s Wharf for restaurants like LouLou’s Griddle in the Middle and the Old Fisherman’s Grotto.

You could drive to Cannery Row in about 5 minutes as well, which has the aquarium and which is a great place to walk around and explore the city.

The Big Sur coast was only about 25 minutes south, and Carmel is about that distance as well.

All in all, this was a great home base for our two days of exploring and fun hotel to relax at. Check it out if you are in the area and let me know what you think in the comments.

Idyllcreek A-Frame Cabin in Idyllwild

This experience was provided free of charge, all opinions are my own.

Idyllwild is a nice mountain town near Palm Springs that’s a popular destination for people that live in lower elevation like myself. I have been many times over the years but when I saw some of the A-frame cabins available on Air BnB I knew I needed to go back. For this trip, I worked with Experience Idyllwild who manages eight properties, two which are A-frames, and Amie and I headed out to spend 24 hours relaxing in a cabin.

Details

  • You can book this cabin here, but it is popular so book it in advance
  • After booking, you will be sent information on how to get there and all the stuff you need to know about the cabin.
  • Pet-friendly but requires an extra fee

Idyllcreek Cabin

We arrived shortly after our check in time and had no problem reaching the cabin and getting set up.

It was just as beautiful as I hoped, with two bedrooms, a full bathroom downstairs and a half bathroom upstairs.

It also had a large kitchen, dining room table and living area with a TV and fireplace.

I didn’t even turn on the TV while I was there, but I got a ton of use out of the fireplace.

The cabin had central heating which was nice since it got down to the 20’s at night when we were there.

The main draw though is, of course, the excellent A-frame design that has been so popular on Instagram over the last few years.

Complete with market lights, outdoor fireplace, and seating, this was a great spot to hang out and to take photos while we stayed there.

There is also a spa out here which is a fun addition, especially on winter nights.

One of the biggest draws for us was that the property was pet-friendly and we could bring our old bulldog. He loved being able to explore the area and sleep by the fireplace.

We hardly left the cabin while we were there, but if you are looking to explore the town, there are some great food options and other spots to check out that you can read about in this post.

Thanks to Idyllcreek for hosting us and check them out online if you want to visit as well.

Westin St. Francis in San Francisco’s Union Square

Disclosure: This stay was provided free of charge, all opinions are my own.

The Westin St. Francis is a historic hotel in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square that has the fun historic charm with all of the modern amenities you have come to expect from luxury hotels. I got a chance to spend two days there while exploring the city and looking for fun Christmas activities and I loved the great location right in the middle of the city and the fact that so many of San Francisco’s most popular attractions were located nearby. Here is all the information so you can check it out as well.

Details

  • Hotel website
  • Location: 335 Powell St, San Francisco, CA 94102

Getting There

If you are flying into SFO for a long weekend, then I would recommend not renting a car and just taking the BART from the airport. The hotel is located about 7 minutes walk from the Powell St BART station which makes getting there convenient. If you drive, you can park at the hotel but it is an extra $60 per day I believe. Plus it is hard to drive in San Francisco, and parking is pretty much always expensive, so public transit / Uber is a great option.

The Hotel

The Westin St Francis was built in the early 1900’s and has a storied history in San Francisco. I was shocked to learn that one of my favorite photographers, Ansel Adams, even photographed the restaurant for them in the mid-1900’s.

The hotel has been expanded since then, and there is a second tower that sits behind the original building and houses 32 floors of rooms.

We visited during December, during which the hotel has two beautiful sugar castles which are a sight to behold.

The lobby is always packed with people coming in to see them, and I enjoyed being able to walk by them on the way in/out of the hotel during my stay as they are truely majestic.

There was a Sweet Shoppe open in the lobby during the weekends in December as well. It had cookies, macaroons and other treats for sale.

The lobby also holds The Clock Bar, which is the modern hotel bar that has all sorts of fun, movie-inspired drinks. We got a late drink here one night (I recommend the “Dirty Harry”) and the tuna poke appetizer, both were excellent and the bar had a relaxed atmosphere, even during the busy Christmas rush.

The Rooms

We stayed in the Deluxe King City View room in the new tower. It was on the 22nd floor, and one the best things about this hotel was the elevator which is glass and looks out over the city as you go up.

Our room was spacious with a large king bed, a desk, two chairs and a small table.

It also had a great view of the city since we were at a high vantage point.

The bathroom was also nice with a granite shower/bath and ample counter space near the sink.

The hotel had tons of amenities including providing workout clothing to use while at the hotel if you didn’t bring your own. They also allowed you to connect to your Netflix account in the room which made for a nice relaxing night after exploring. Honestly, I loved my time at the Westin St Francis in San Francisco. I have already recommended it to multiple people due to its historic charm and its great location in the city. Check it out, especially during the holidays, and let me know what you think in the comments. You can also find more spots to explore in San Francisco here.

The Landing Resort & Spa in South Lake Tahoe

Located only a stone’s throw from Heavenly Village and the casinos of South Lake Tahoe, The Landing Tahoe Resort & Spa feels like it is worlds away. This luxury hotel, situated right next to the lake is full of amenities, a fantastic restaurant and is a great home away from home in South Lake Tahoe. I got a chance to spend a few days there with my wife and I am sure we will be back, here is all the information.

Details

  • Book Here
  • Amenities: Turn down service, champagne welcome, valet, bike rentals, beach access, heated bathroom floors, heated toilet seat
  • Location: 4104 Lakeshore Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150

Getting There

Heading north on Highway 50 through South Lake Tahoe, you will want to turn left on Park Ave, then right on Pine Blvd. From there you will turn left on Stateline Ave and you will see the resort on the left hand side.

The Hotel

Upon arriving at the hotel, you will be helped to check in by the valets and given a glass of champagne to drink while getting checked into the hotel. After getting keys, one of the employees took our car near to the room, and another gave us a tour of the small property, helped us get our bags and took them up to the room for us. This whole experience was fantastic and easily made me more excited about the hotel.

Our room was in a great location on the second floor with a view of Lake Tahoe right from the balcony.

The king sized bed was comfortable and the room had a light switch operated fireplace for when it got cold.

The bathroom was immaculate with stone floors, heated so they were never cold, and a beautiful granite shower. Even the toilet seat had a light and could be heated with the press of a button. These things were fun but didn’t matter as much for us in the summer, in the winter I am sure they are a huge win though.

Since we were celebrating, they even included a bottle of champagne in the mini fridge in the room for us. This was above and beyond what we expected and was a lot of fun to receive. The property also features a workout room and restaurant. We took advantage of the restaurant multiple times but didn’t visit the workout room, priorities right?

One of the things we did love though was the bikes you could check out for free when you stayed at the hotel. We took them up to the Heavenly Village which was a short 5-minute bike ride away and then locked them up and explored the shops and eateries.

Across from the hotel is a private beach and being a guest gives you access to it. It is a great spot to hang out at during the day and there is even a playground for children. We also watched the sunset here, but it was honestly hard to beat the view from our room for sunset.

Jimmy’s Restaurant

The restaurant on the property, Jimmy’s is one of the best hotel restaurants I have been to. Two of the dishes, in particular, were enough for my wife and I to go back a second night, the rack of lamb and the Kataifi wrapped feta. You can read all about the restaurant in this post since it was good enough to warrant its own post.

As you can no doubt see, The Landing Resort in Lake Tahoe is a great place to stay in the city. I can’t wait to return again, and if you go be sure to check out my guide on what to do in South Lake Tahoe here and the video I made below.

Hotel Azure in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe has no shortage of hotels to choose from when you visit; for me though, I like the places that feel more quaint over the large casino hotels. You will usually find me at a place like Hotel Azure or The Landing Resort when I visit South Lake Tahoe. Hotel Azure is a fantastic spot for families as it has large open rooms, is close to many of the downtown restaurants and is right across the street from the water. I only stayed one night, but I could easily see myself staying again. Here is all the information so you can check it out as well.

Details

  • Book Here
  • Amenities: Bikes to check out, two spas, pool, workout room and game room.

Getting There

Hotel Azure is located south of Heavenly Village on Highway 50. It is right before the bend in the road on the left-hand side (if you are heading south). There is a large parking lot with lots of space that you can use as a guest.

The Hotel

Hotel Azure just recently completed a major renovation and rebrand in early 2017, and it shows with the newly redone facade and beautiful rooms. Checking into the hotel was an easy and pleasant experience with multiple people working the front desk.

Our room was in a fantastic location on the third floor, and it looked down on the pool and the lake in the distance from the large balcony.

The bedroom was massive with a large kind sized bed, small couch, and flat screen TV. I always appreciate when hotel rooms are large like this as it feels like you have more room to relax.

The bathroom was renovated as well, with a second sink outside of the bathroom itself and a walk in closet next to it.

We didn’t spend much time in the room though as the hotel has some great amenities like the dual spa and pool.

There is also a game room with air hockey and pool next to the fitness center.

They provide bikes that you can check out, which is great as it is right across the street from a bike path and right next to some restaurants you can bike to for food. My favorites are:

MacDuffs

One of my favorite spots in Lake Tahoe, get the fish and chips and the bread pudding.

Sprouts

Great spot for the vegetarians and meat eaters alike. I recommend the nachos.

Bear Beach Cafe

Basically attached to the hotel, this diner is a great spot for breakfast; the muffins are especially good.

As you can see, this is a fun place to stay in Lake Tahoe, especially for families. Let me know what you think in the comments and check out my other South Lake Tahoe recommendations here.

Horsetail Ranch: A Luxury Vacation Rental in Creston, Near Paso Robles

In San Luis Obispo County, along California’s Central Coast, Paso Robles is becoming a booming area full of wine, restaurants, and places to explore. When looking for a place to stay in the area, it is hard to beat the new luxury vacation rental property just opened last year known as HorseTail Ranch, about 25 minutes south of downtown Paso Robles. With two spots to rent on the 150-acre property, it is a great home away from home. Both options are unique and can be used for everything from weddings and retreats to family vacations or romantic weekends. Here is all the information so that you can check this spot out for yourself.

Details

  • Book here
  • Bring your own food
  • Horse rides available on the property with Central Coast Trailrides

Getting There

When you book, they will give you directions to the property as well as times to arrive and what to expect. Both houses are on different sides of the ranch so you can stay in one and never see the other, which truly makes it feel remote, and I loved that.

The people who manage the property, Brian and Crystal are great as well, they are actually one of the highlights. They run the horse riding business on the property called Central Coast Trailrides, which you can read about here and they are always ready to help with problems that may arise.

They also have a bunch of animals including a goat, two donkeys, a mini horse, chickens and regular horses. There were multiple times during our weekend there when we just went down and hung out with them and the animals at the barn, adding to the experience.

The Main House

There are two houses on the property. The main one is a five bedroom home with lots of amenities and which overlooks the lake. There were people staying at it and having a wedding in the back, so I didn’t see the inside. Online the photos make it look impressive though.

The Cabin

The one we stayed in was an awesome off the grid cabin that could sleep 6. It is truly off the grid, with no wifi or TV and with all the power coming from solar panels.

From the moment we pulled up to the cabin we were excited to be staying there as it was designed in such a cool way, very rustic and modern.

The Cabin is situated on top of a small ridge with a beautiful view looking over the hills in the distance and ridiculously perfect sunsets.

Outside of the house, there are a lot of outdoor seating options and a grill for cooking.

The interior is just as awesome, with a large open layout for it’s one big main story, and a loft above with two pull out beds.

My wife and I stayed here solo, but we could have easily had a few friends with us, and it wouldn’t have felt too cozy.

The one bedroom is downstairs, and it has the house’s only bathroom. If you go with friends, make sure they are good friends as you have to go through the bedroom to get to the bathroom.

There is a small kitchen under the stairs with a fridge and stove top. This is the only area I wish was a little bigger as there was not a lot of space to cook, but it worked for what we were doing.

For food, you will want to bring your own as the property is not very close to any restaurants or grocery stores. My wife and I loved that aspect as the outdoor seating, especially for sunset, was awesome and it was a great place to eat the dinner we made.

Since the cabin is up on a hill, the views during sunset are second to none as you can see for miles, here are a few shots.

With the lack of Wifi and TV, I used it as a time to unplug a little, which was a huge plus for me since I spend so much of my time connected to the internet. There was cell reception though so we could always connect with people or check email if needed.

The Lake

The property also has a lake which is near the other house, but you can drive or walk to it. There is a paddleboat you can take out on the lake, or you can just sit and relax by it.

Horse Rides

As I stated above, there is horseback riding available on the property with Central Coast Trailrides. I would recommend doing that as it’s a great way to see the property and relax, you can read more about it here.

Wineries

If you are looking to explore wineries, as I am sure you are in Paso Robles, these three are all within 15-20 minutes.

Still Water Winery

This is a smaller winery, but it has live music on the weekends and a relaxed vibe with great people working there.

Sculpterra

Sculpterra is one of my favorites in Paso Robles as it has lots of unique sculptures to explore around the property.

Cass Winery

This is a great spot for lunch as they have excellent food and you can do a wine tasting while eating the food.

All in all, if you are looking for a great spot to set up a home base for exploring Paso Robles, or for a wedding or event, it is hard to beat HorseTail Ranch. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments, I honestly can’t wait to visit again.

Kimpton Goodland in Goleta / Santa Barbara Hotel Review

Located 15 minutes from Santa Barbara in the town of Goleta, the Kimpton Goodland is one of the most fun boutique hotels I have stayed at on the central coast. The property retains that retro vibe while having the fresh, modern amenities you have come to expect from destination hotels. I had a hard time even wanting to leave since the design helps you to disconnect and there was always something to do ranging from checking out records and taking a yoga class to enjoying sangria in the lobby. Here is all the information so you can check it out for yourself.

Details

  • Book Here
  • Amenities: Record players, pool, sangria in lobby, workout room, backgammon tables, etc
  • Location: 5650 Calle Real, Goleta, CA 93117

Getting There

Traveling up Highway 101 / Pacific Coast Highway, you will exit on Patterson Ave in the town of Goleta (10 minutes past Santa Barbara). After turning left on Calle Real, the hotel will be about a mile down on the right.

The Hotel

From the moment you pull up to the hotel, see the clean pastel logo and walk past the airstream to enter the lobby, you will know you are not at a traditional hotel.

The lobby looks like something you would see on Pinterest with the bohemian style that is so popular currently.

There is even a small room off the lobby with a fantastic neon sign and tons of records that you can check out for your in-room record player.

The lobby also has water and sangria available throughout the day, making it a great place just to sit and relax.

Off the lobby, are both the restaurant and bar which maintain the same style as the rest of the hotel (more on that later).

There are even a few tables near the bar where you can play backgammon and pool.

The Room

The rooms have been thought out just as well as the rest of the hotel, complete with a large bed, record player and chair.

The style is clean with white and wood tones which are immediately welcoming.

The highlight for me was the record player; I checked out a new record every night to listen to while in my room.

The only downside I found with the retro design is that the windows were thinner than normal which lead to the hotel being a little noisier than I would have liked. It wasn’t a huge deal but something to note.

The Outpost Restaurant

Since I was staying over the weekend, my wife and I decided to grab brunch at the hotel’s restaurant. This ended up being a huge win since it had the style we had come to love at the hotel and the food was equally great. Here is what we ordered:

Fritter Benedict – I really liked the nontraditional jalapeño corn fritter base instead of the English Muffin. Also, the chorizo is not the type you get to at a Mexican restaurant, it is prepared how ham would be in a traditional Benedict, and it is rich and full of flavor. I liked the chipotle hollandaise as well; it had a little spice that matched perfectly with the creamy sauce.

Avocado Toast – The toast had the same classic style you would expect with avocado toast while fun additions like pickled onions and cilantro. These enhancements added a great flavor to the dish that made it a nice, light brunch choice without compromising the taste.

Brioche French Toast – This dish came highly recommended as it takes the sweet style of French toast and tweaks it into a Mexican chocolate version. Mexican chocolate is traditionally less sweet, which works well in a heavy dish like this. The whipped cream has a hint of tequila in it which is a fun addition, and it is topped with cashew brittle, adding a nice crunch. My wife and I were both excited with this dish.

Overall, I was impressed with the food here as it is much better than you would expect from a hotel restaurant. I would totally eat brunch here even if I weren’t staying at the hotel.

As you can no doubt see, my wife and I enjoyed our time at the Kimpton Goodland. I could easily see it becoming a place we go to relax in the future, and I totally recommend it. Be sure to check it out and let me know what you think in the comments.

Flamingo Conference Resort & Spa in Santa Rosa

When I travel, I always look for unique hotels to try during my stay. So during my recent trip to Santa Rosa, I chose to stay at the historic and mid-century modern spot known as the Flamingo Conference Resort & Spa. With a history that includes being a playground for celebrities in the mid-1900’s, and as the largest holder of Peanuts states (8) in Santa Rosa, the Flamingo Conference Resort & Spa is a fun and well-priced place to stay in Sonoma County.

Getting There

After getting off Highway 101 on 3rd St, you will want to make your way to 4th St. The Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa is on the corner of 4th St and Farmers Lane. You can’t miss it as there is a large neon flamingo sign that beckons you in.

The Hotel

flamingo-santa-rosa-9

The hotel is in the shape of a circle, with rooms in different buildings around the circle and a big pool in the center.

flamingo-santa-rosa-12

I really liked that they had enclosed breezeways that you could walk through to get to each part of the hotel. It was a nice touch, especially on cold winter nights.

flamingo-santa-rosa-11

The lobby of the hotel has images of famous Hollywood actors hanging out by the pool in the 50’s and 60’s, as well as a newspaper article from when the hotel opened. It was only $8 to stay!

flamingo-santa-rosa-10

The hotel lobby also has a couple of Peanuts sculptures since the home base of Peanuts is in Santa Rosa (read more about that here). It is fun to see the sculptures and exploring Peanuts history in Santa Rosa is an excellent way to spend a day.

The Rooms

flamingo-santa-rosa-4

The hotel just went through a massive multi-million dollar renovation, and you can see that come through in the rooms.

flamingo-santa-rosa-2

I had a corner room, and it was awesome. The room featured a large living area with a couch and TV.

flamingo-santa-rosa-3

There was a smaller room connected to it with the King sized bed and the attached bathroom.

flamingo-santa-rosa-13

There was also a nice patio that overlooked the pool and the center area of the hotel. The hotel has a fantastic health club that you can use as well, which has weight rooms, yoga classes and a lap pool for swimming.

All in all, I was impressed with my choice of the Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa while in Santa Rosa. It was a great jumping off the point for Sonoma County, and I recommend you give it a try if you are in the area.
